The latest USDA weekly slaughter report shows the number of chickens harvested year-to-date down 4.3% from the 5-year average. However, frame prices were decreased from the last report. Some reports suggested that a strong call for cut-up was limiting WOG availability, which would also result in greater production of frames. Mechanically separated meat and frames often trade in a similar relationship to each other. However, over the past month, MSC traded sideways. This was likely influenced by an at least moderate call from buyers in the further processing sector. Meanwhile, jumbo boneless breast meat quotations were increased throughout January. While demand was termed mostly as moderate throughout the month, external factors such as weather, plant fires, and HPAI helped limit supply availability. This in turn led to a more bullish market.
